TEXT

Relative units have been used in the CSS (ems) so the site accommodates text re-sizing in all common browsers.

To increase text size:

  • If you find the text on this site is too small, you can change it easily in your browser settings. To do this you should simply adjust your browser’s settings.
  • If you use Microsoft Internet Explorer, go to the View menu, select Text Size and then either Larger or Largest.
  • If you use Mozilla Firefox, go to the ‘View Menu’, select ‘Text Size’ and the select ‘Increase’.  You can also increase the text size by using the keyboard, pressing ‘Ctrl’ and ‘+’ at the same time.

LINKS

Links have context for screen readers, to allow users to understand the destination page content.

IMAGES (ALT ATTRIBUTE)

All content images used in this site include descriptive ALT attributes, to allow screen readers, used by those with restricted eye sight, to understand the context with which any images are used.

Purely decorative graphics for layout include null ALT attributes. Images such as background images that have no useful content have empty alternate text.

Images can be turned off in your browser settings.

  • In Internet Explorer, go to the ‘Tools’ menu and select ‘Internet Options’. In the ‘Advanced’ tab, untick the box labelled ‘Show pictures’ under the Multimedia section
  • In Firefox on a PC, go to the ‘Tools’ menu and select ‘Options’. Within the ‘Content’ tab, untick the box labelled ‘Load images automatically’
  • In Firefox on a Mac, go to the ‘Firefox’ menu and select ‘Preferences’. Within the ‘Content’ tab, untick the box labelled ‘Load images automatically’
  • In Safari, go to the ‘Safari’ menu and select ‘Preferences’. Within the ‘Appearance’ tab untick the box labelled ‘Display images when the page opens’

COLOUR PALETTE

We have ensured good colour contrast on the site – foreground content and text stands out sufficiently from background content.

Changing the site’s background colour can be particularly useful for users who rely on magnification technology as white can produce an uncomfortable glare. It is also possible to change the colour of body text on the site.

Both can be achieved by changing preferences in your browser.

To specify website colours in Internet Explorer:

  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
  • Click the General tab, and then do one or both of the following:
  • To change the font, click Fonts. Specify the fonts you want to use, and then click OK.
  • To change colours, click Colours, and then clear the Use Windows colours check box. Click each colour box, click the colour you want to switch to, and then click OK. When you’re done choosing colours, click OK.
  • Click OK.

To specify website fonts and colours in Firefox:

  • Open Internet Explorer
  • Options
  • Content tab
  • Select the colours button in the fonts and colours section
  • Select colours for text and background

However, many web pages set their own colors, so your choices will have no effect. To override the colors defined by web pages, uncheck the Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above option.
